Enhanced transmission of slit arrays in an extremely thin metallic film
Horizontal resonances of slit arrays are studied. They can lead to an
enhanced transmission that cannot be explained using the single-mode
approximation. A new type of cavity resonance is found when the slits are
narrow for a wavelength very close to the period. It can be excited for very
low thicknesses. Optimization shows these structures could constitute
interesting monochromatic filters
Photon recycling in Fabry-Perot micro-cavities based on SiN waveguides
We present a numerical analysis and preliminary experimental results on
one-dimensional Fabry-Perot micro-cavities in SiN waveguides. The
Fabry-Perot micro-cavities are formed by two distributed Bragg reflectors
separated by a straight portion of waveguide. The Bragg reflectors are composed
by a few air slits produced within the SiN waveguides. In order to
increase the quality factor of the micro-cavities, we have minimized, with a
multiparametric optimization tool, the insertion loss of the reflectors by
varying the length of their first periods (those facing the cavity). To explain
the simulation results the coupling of the fundamental waveguide mode with
radiative modes in the Fabry-Perot micro-cavities is needed. This effect is
described as a recycling of radiative modes in the waveguide. To support the
modelling, preliminary experimental results of micro-cavities in SiN
waveguides realized with Focused Ion Beam technique are reported.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Oil price and potential output growth in the long run
The goal of this paper is to gauge the impact of the expected oil price increase on the potential output growth of the French economy in the long run. This potential output exercise is conducted using CES (Constant Elasticity of Substitution) production functions featuring three factors: capital, labour and energy. Moreover, the sectoral composition of the economy is taken into account through a breaking down of the economy into four sectors (manufacturing industry, construction, market services, and agriculture). The model yields a potential output of growth of about 2 % per year in the absence of oil price variations. The various scenarios of oil price increases result in a shortage of growth between 0.1 and 0.6 % per year in the medium run with respect to the constant oil price scenario. The major part of this growth shortage channels through a negative impact on the manufacturing sector, which is highly energy-intensive and also the engine of technical progress.Potential output growth, Unbalanced growth, Oil price
Wide-angle reflection-mode spatial filtering and splitting with photonic crystal gratings and single-layer rod gratings
Cataloged from PDF version of article.New diffractive optical elements offering a frequency tolerant, very efficient, high-pass and bandpass spatial filtering over a broad range of incidence angles are demonstrated by numerical simulations. The device operates in reflection mode owing to the (nearly) perfect blazing. It relies on two-dimensional square-lattice photonic crystals composed of dielectric rods with simple corrugations at the interface. Similar performance can be obtained with gratings composed of a single rod layer placed in the near field of a metal mirror, indicating a route to geometries that can be easily fabricated with modern nanotechnologies. Also equal splitting between zero and first negative orders can be obtained for incidence-angle variations that are wider than 60 degrees. (C) 2014 Optical Society of Americ

Abstract: The object of the present study es a classical issue but one that, may be because of that, remains actual. The article starts by a brief general theory concerning the principles of law, which will demand the study of ius-philosophical matters, as the general concept of principle, its difference from the particular rules of law, the derivation of the rules of law from the principles of law, the functions of the principles of law, and the classic discussion between natural law theory and legal positivism regarding the source of principles of law. The work ends with a brief enumeration of the principles of Labour Law generally accepted.Resumen: El objeto del presente estudio es un tema clásico pero que, precisamente por ello, jamás pierde actualidad: el tema de los principios jurídicos. El trabajo comienza con una breve teoría general de los principios jurídicos, para lo cual aborda cuestiones ius-filosóficas, como el concepto general de principio, su diferencia respecto de las normas jurídicas particulares, la derivación de las normas a partir de los principios fundamentales por via de deducción o de determinación, las funciones de los principios jurídicos y la clásica polémica acerca del origen de los principios entre el iusnaturalismo y el positivismo. Move, hold and touch: A framework for Tangible gesture interactive systems

Technology is spreading in our everyday world, and digital interaction beyond the screen, with real objects, allows taking advantage of our natural manipulative and communicative skills. Tangible gesture interaction takes advantage of these skills by bridging two popular domains in Human-Computer Interaction, tangible interaction and gestural interaction. In this paper, we present the Tangible Gesture Interaction Framework (TGIF) for classifying and guiding works in this field. We propose a classification of gestures according to three relationships with objects: move, hold and touch. Following this classification, we analyzed previous work in the literature to obtain guidelines and common practices for designing and building new tangible gesture interactive systems. We describe four interactive systems as application examples of the TGIF guidelines and we discuss the descriptive, evaluative and generative power of TGIF
Gap maps and intrinsic diffraction losses in one-dimensional photonic crystal slabs
A theoretical study of photonic bands for one-dimensional (1D) lattices
embedded in planar waveguides with strong refractive index contrast is
presented. The approach relies on expanding the electromagnetic field on the
basis of guided modes of an effective waveguide, and on treating the coupling
to radiative modes by perturbation theory. Photonic mode dispersion, gap maps,
and intrinsic diffraction losses of quasi-guided modes are calculated for the
case of self-standing membranes as well as for Silicon-on-Insulator structures.
Photonic band gaps in a waveguide are found to depend strongly on the core
thickness and on polarization, so that the gaps for transverse electric and
transverse magnetic modes most often do not overlap. Radiative losses of
quasi-guided modes above the light line depend in a nontrivial way on structure
parameters, mode index and wavevector. The results of this study may be useful
for the design of integrated 1D photonic structures with low radiative losses.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Physical Review
Enhancement of spatial coherence by surface plasmons
We report on a method to generate a stationary interference pattern from two independent optical sources, each illuminating a single slit in Young's interference experiment. The pattern arises as a result of the action of surface plasmons traveling between subwavelength slits milled in a metal film. The visibility of the interference pattern can be manipulated by tuning the wavelength of one of the optical sources. © 2007 Optical. Society of America
Ultra-high Q/V Fabry-Perot microcavity on SOI substrate
International audienceWe experimentally demonstrate an ultra high Q/V nanocavity on SOI substrate. The design is based on modal adaptation within the cavity and allows to measure a quality factor of 58.000 for a modal volume of 0.6(λ/n)3. This record Q/V value of 105 achieved for a structure standing on a physical substrate, rather than on membrane, is in very good agreement with theoretical predictions also shown. Based on these experimental results, we show that further refinements of the cavity design could lead to Q/V ratios close to 106
Tangible meets gestural: Comparing and blending post-WIMP interaction paradigms
More and more objects of our everyday environment are becoming smart and connected, offering us new interaction possibilities. Tangible interaction and gestural interaction are promising communication means with these objects in this post-WIMP interaction era. Although based on different principles, they both exploit our body awareness and our skills to provide a richer and more intuitive interaction. Occasionally, when user gestures involve physical artifacts, tangible interaction and gestural interaction can blend into a new paradigm, i.e., tangible gesture interaction [5]. This workshop fosters the comparison among these different interaction paradigms and offers a unique opportunity to discuss their analogies and differences, as well as the definitions, boundaries, strengths, application domains and perspectives of tangible gesture interaction.
